Macron: Russia should end military operation in Ukraine “as soon as possible”

French President Emmanuel Macron called on Russian leader Vladimir Putin to end the military special operation in Ukraine as soon as possible and restore the country's territorial integrity and sovereignty. This is reported by the Elysee Palace.

“He [Macron] condemned the ongoing Russian military operation in Ukraine and recalled his demand to stop it and start negotiations as soon as possible,”— The report says.

After talks with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and IAEA head Rafael Grossi, Macron, in a telephone conversation with Putin, pointed out the need to ensure the safety of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.

According to the French leader, Russian military actions “became the cause of today's risks to the integrity” stations. He demanded that Russian troops withdraw their heavy and light weapons from there and that appropriate measures be taken on the recommendations of the IAEA to ensure the safety of the site.

“The President of the Republic will maintain contact with President Zelensky, as well as with the Director General of the IAEA, and will talk with President Putin in the coming days so that an agreement can be reached that guarantees the safety of the Zaporozhye NPP,” — concluded at the Elysee Palace.

The conversation between the two leaders took place earlier than September 11th. As the Kremlin reported, Putin drew Macron's attention to the fact that Ukraine, using Western weapons, continues to purposefully shell the civilian infrastructure of Donbass.

In addition, the Russian President pointed to regular Ukrainian attacks on the facilities of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, including the storage of radioactive waste. He asked to influence Kyiv so that the shelling of the station would be immediately stopped.

The parties expressed mutual readiness for non-politicized cooperation on the situation around the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant with the participation of the IAEA.

Putin and Macron also discussed the removal grain from Ukraine and agreed that grain and fertilizers should be directed primarily to the needs of the countries of Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

Earlier on September 11, Macron, in a conversation with British Prime Minister Liz Truss, said that the military conflict in Ukraine is one of the priority topics on which Paris and London will cooperate.

« Support for Ukraine, as well as food and energy security will be one of our common priorities,— said the French leader.

France and a number of other countries began to supply weapons to Ukraine after the start of the Russian military operation. In March, Paris handed over 18 CAESAR 155mm self-propelled artillery mounts to Kiev. In June, after a visit to Kyiv, Macron assured that arms supplies to Ukraine would continue.

Russia has repeatedly stressed that the West in this way only contributes to prolonging the conflict. The transfer of long-range weapons to Kyiv will lead to the geographical expansion of the special operation, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned.
