Eddie Chacon :: Step By Step
We last heard from synth-soul maestro Eddie Chacon last fall, when he was rolling around town spreading the spaced-out gospel in the Sissy Chacon-directed clip for “Holy Hell.” He’s back with “Step By Step,” another low-key groover boasting a captivating, duck-forward video directed by Sissy and Brandon Bloom. “Listen to your heart and know,” Chacon sings over cascading flute runs and a gently stuttering beat, indicating that his forthcoming album Sundown transmits from the same gauzy, deeply personal zone as his 2020 classic Pleasure, Joy, and Happiness. The record was recorded in Los Angeles and Ibiza in the summer of 2021 with producer John Carroll Kirby and a live band, where they began each day with a spin of Pharoah Sanders’ ode to McCoy Tyner, “Greeting To Saud” before settling into leisurely sessions. That relaxed charm carries over in the video for “Step By Step,” which finds a shades sporting Chacon visiting the park, taking to the water, and stoically blissing out. Like a duck gracefully cruising across the surface of the water, Chacon’s glide seems effortless. | j woodbury
