William Tyler & The Impossible Truth :: Area Code 601
Crash landing somewhere between the deep fried expanses of Amon Düül II and brawny riffs of Tres Hombres, “Area Code 601” presents guitarist William Tyler in a thrilling new mode: that of a feedback-drenched country prog rocker. Joined by backing band The Impossible Truth—bassist Jack Lawrence (Raconteurs, Dead Weather), drummer Brian Kotzur (Silver Jews), and Luke Schneider (Margo Price)—the song arrives alongside the announcement of a new live album, Secret Stratosphere, due out March 31st from Merge. Cut live at Yellowhammer Brewing in Huntsville, Alabama, “Area Code 601″—named for the Mississippi designation—presents Tyler and co. at their most uninhibited, recalling the maelstrom of Blue Cathedral-era Comets on Fire or, as Tyler himself puts it, “Hawkwind meets Barefoot Jerry.” Matching Schneider’s careening, fuzzed out leads, Tyler pilots his Gibson SG toward the upper atmosphere. Alongside a previously-released version of “Whole New Dude”, the song heralds the arrival of The Impossible Truth as a force to be contended with. | j woodbury
